About Art Therapy

A Gentler Pathway to Healing and Self-Discovery

"I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for."

What is Art Therapy?

At its core, art therapy is a recognized mental health profession that combines psychological framework with the creative process. It uses the act of making art to help people explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, and reduce anxiety.

The most important thing to know is this: Art therapy is not an art class.

We do not care about technique, symmetry, or whether the final product looks like "good art." Instead, we focus entirely on the process. The canvas, the clay, or the paper simply becomes a safe mirror for your inner world.

Why Choose Art Therapy?

When Words are Not Enough

Traditional talk therapy is wonderful, but our analytical brains can sometimes use words to intellectualize, hide, or protect us from what we are truly feeling. Art therapy bypasses the inner critic.

Here is how it supports your well-being:

  • Accessing the Non-Verbal: Trauma, deep stress, and complex emotions are often stored in parts of the brain that don't communicate in language. Art gives those quiet spaces a shape and a voice.

  • Nervous System Regulation: The physical, tactile rhythm of art-making -the stroke of a brush, the molding of clay, the steady movement of a pencil - acts as a sensory anchor. It actively helps soothe an overworked nervous system.

  • Externalizing the Heavy Stuff: When you paint or draw a feeling, that feeling is no longer trapped inside your body. It is now safely on the paper in front of you. This allows us to look at it together, process it, and gently take away its power over you.

Debunking the Myths

  • Myth: "I have to be good at art to try this."

    • The Reality: Absolutely no artistic skill or background is required. If you can make a mark on paper or squeeze a piece of clay, you can fully participate and heal through art therapy.

  • Myth: "The therapist will analyze my drawing and tell me what’s wrong with me."

    • The Reality: I do not interpret your art from a distance like a judge. You are always the expert on your own creation. My role is to help you explore what you see and feel within your work.

What Does a Session Look Like?

  • A typical session is a gentle, collaborative flow. We start with a brief verbal check-in to see where you are at. Then, I will invite you into a creative directive tailored to your current emotional state - this might involve watercolor painting, slow drawing, collage, or working with clay.

  • As you create, the space remains quiet, reflective, and completely free of judgment. We close the session by gently talking through your experience and honoring whatever your inner colors revealed.
